Bhubaneswar, India: Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap, the first of two Pollution Control Vessels built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), in Goa on January 05, 2026. The commissioning marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing and maritime capability development.
With over 60 per cent indigenous content, ICGS Samudra Pratap is India’s first indigenously designed Pollution Control Vessel and the largest ship in the Indian Coast Guard fleet to date. The vessel has been designed to address contemporary maritime challenges and reflects the technological maturity and capability of India’s defence industrial ecosystem.
The induction of ICGS Samudra Pratap will substantially enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard in pollution control, fire-fighting, maritime safety, environmental protection, and extended surveillance across India’s vast maritime zones. It will strengthen the Coast Guard’s ability to respond swiftly to marine pollution incidents and conduct sustained operations in the Exclusive Economic Zone and beyond.
The commissioning of the vessel underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s multi-dimensional role in safeguarding national maritime interests and reinforces India’s commitment to being a responsible maritime power, ensuring peace, stability, and environmental security in the Indo-Pacific region.
