Bhubaneswar: The matter of renaming the Revenshaw University has raised up to a huge political controversy in Odisha. There have been two sets of opinions regarding the matter that one group agrees to it and another criticizes it heavily. The people who are in support of this argument say that there are numerous number of kings and rulers who have contributed so much for the states establishment. There should be Universities and colleges named after them. Such a renowned and old University like Revenshaw should not be named after a britisher who have exploited our country for so long.
There should not be so much discussion and argument over this matter. If the name of this university is changed to some other Odia noble figure’s name, it is believed that the reputation and excellency of the educational institution is not going to alter. It will be intact. Whoever has studied in this institution has not come here for the literal name of the institute but for its quality and standard of education and teaching.
If looked at the historic perspective of the Revenshaw University, it has been named after a British administrator. Though this has been suggested by the king Maharaja Krushnachandra Bhanjadeo of odisha when it was established that the university will be named on the administrator. It could have been named on the place itself at that time giving a sense of pride for the land and prosperity.
There has been a highly mixed reactions towards the issue. The matter goes back to the positive and negative contribution of T. Revenshaw and the justification for his name associated with a university which is so reputed and recognised.
