Bhubaneswar: Amid rising uncertainty over energy supplies due to tensions in West Asia, Russia is prepared to reroute crude oil shipments to India to help cushion potential disruptions, according to an industry source cited by Reuters.
The source said around 9.5 million barrels of crude are already on board tankers near Indian waters, and these shipments could reach Indian ports within weeks if required. While the original destinations of the cargoes were not disclosed, the oil could reportedly be redirected quickly, providing short-term relief for Indian refiners.
India remains vulnerable to global supply shocks because of its heavy reliance on imported energy. Officials say the country’s strategic petroleum reserves currently cover roughly 25 days of demand, while refiners are also operating with relatively tight inventories of key fuels such as gasoil, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas.
A government source indicated that New Delhi is actively exploring alternative supply options in case the ongoing conflict in the Middle East persists beyond 10 to 15 days. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure stable energy availability and avoid disruptions in domestic fuel markets.
The developments come as global energy markets remain sensitive to geopolitical tensions that could affect key shipping routes and supply chains, prompting major importers like India to diversify sourcing and secure backup supplies.
