The Oldest Water Reservoir, Hirakud dam to get a Facelift

Bhubaneswar: Hirakud reservoir is one of the oldest multipurpose dam built across the river Mahanadi requires an urgent attention in terms of the sustainability of the wastage water and protection of irrigation facilities.

Hirakud dam in Odisha is known to be the longest earthen dam in the world.  The dam has been facing issues related to water logging and drainage system which is the reason the irrigation processes are getting affected in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir and Sonepur districts.

The Odisha government has sanctioned 855 crores for the renovation of the dam within a time period of five years, by 2027-28. The Hirakud dam is going to get a major make over through the anticipated project to renovate the canal system to rearrange the irrigation system for a better agriculture.

The earthen base canal system will be transformed into concrete based for the purpose of a better distribution for agriculture. The main aim is to provide water to every end for without any wastage of water for making the irrigation system more suitable for the farmers.
