UGC Renews Autonomous Status of BJB College Till 2031–32

Bhubaneswar: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended the autonomous status of Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar College, popularly known as BJB College, for a further 10 years from the academic session 2022–23 to 2031–32.

The decision was approved by the UGC’s Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges and includes ex-post-facto regularisation of the gap years between 2022 and 2025, in accordance with the UGC Regulations, 2023. Sources indicated that the renewal resolves earlier delays linked to pending compliance matters.

BJB College was first granted autonomous status in the 1999–2000 academic session. With the renewed autonomy, the institution will be able to exercise enhanced academic flexibility in framing syllabi, conducting examinations, restructuring courses, and introducing innovative programmes. The status also improves eligibility for research grants and funding from national agencies.

UGC member Prof Sachidananda Mohanty reportedly played a key role in facilitating compliance with regulatory requirements and underscored the importance of timely renewal processes for institutions seeking uninterrupted autonomous functioning.

The extension is expected to strengthen academic governance at BJB College and support ongoing reforms aimed at improving quality and institutional innovation.
