Union Minister for Road and Transport, Nitin Gadkari at Times Now Summit

Bhubaneswar: In India there are 1,46,000 kilometres of national highways. Amongst those majority national highways are four lanes. Many other express highways with advanced capacities are under process such as express highways for excess control, and green express highways. There is a division in the parliament about the traffic density of the two lane express highways is more than ten thousand PCUs. It will be converted to four lanes which will cost about 10 lakh crores for constructing 25 thousand kilometres.

Most importantly, when the PCUs are more than ten thousand the highways need to be four lanes. As the traffic density increases the number of lanes in the highways gets increased as well, the four lanes become six lanes and six lanes become right lanes. We need more highways because of the overcrowded traffic jams and air pollution. The width of the highways also need to be increased.

As the national capital city, Delhi has been facing humongously high traffic jams, transportation issues, air pollution etc. The government in collaboration with the Delhi state government is planning to curb the issues as soon as possible by constructing new highways, road transportation facilities, look into the air pollution matter and so on.

Delhi has four mountains of garbage whereas the government is releasing those mountains slowly. Lately about 80 lakh ton garbage was used in the Delhi Mumbai express highways and hopefully all the four garbage mountains will be utilized in the road constructions within a span of 2-3 years then the places will be cleaned. Infrastructure, ecology and environment should go hand in hand.

Mr Gadkari spoke about converting the vehicle honking with the classical musical instrument sounds to moderate noise pollution, launching hydrogen vehicles to control fuel prices and flash charging buses which will cost about 30 percent less road fair as compared to the diesel buses.
