Bhubaneswar: Inflation is increasing again in our state. The price of vegetables are skyrocketing. The poor and lower middle class people are as if denied the luxury of having vegetables. It becomes hard to fill the bag when going to market. Maximum green vegetables cost above Rs. 70-100.
Continuous rain fall obstructs the yieldings of vegetables on the ground. The supply of vegetables are shrinking due to heavy rains and whatever quantity is coming to the market are mostly rotting aways in short time. It is becoming hard to maintain everyday vegetables consumption because of this reason.
Odisha is still depending on the neighboring states for vegetable supplies. How we can manage to become independent in terms of food supplies for ourselves. The vegetables produced in the local agriculture are available affordably but when the supplies are from the other states or districts are sold in the market with higher price. Most of the vegetables available in the market now are coming from other states like Andhra Pradesh, Raipur, and getting wasted on the way. Most of the time the trucks are not able to reach due to heavy rains.
The normal everyday consumable veggies like brinjal, ridge-guard, bitter guard, parbal, cucumber, beans, tomatoes, carrot, are selling above the price of Rs 50-80 per k.g. On the other hand, the shopkeepers are refraining from buying vegetables from the wholesale market due the short life span of the veggies and in the fear of wastage. As the supplies of vegetables are getting rotten during the transportation, the retail sellers are selling the rest of the qualities in higher price. If rain continues for long, it may be hard to get vegetables in the markets let alone the inflation of veggies.
Due to dearth of cold storages the local farmers are suffering of not being able to store their vegetable productions and forced to sell them in meagre prices. If there was ample number of green cold storages systems, the local farmers could have store their productions and sell them as per the market value in time. The government is not paying attention towards this matter and due to lack of management on price control by the system the consumer is in worry.
