Bhubaneswar: Residents across Bhubaneswar have begun noticing a new addition along several city roads—pole-mounted dust and smoke collector machines installed by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) as part of its efforts to combat air pollution and improve urban environmental quality.
The innovative devices have been deployed to capture dust and smoke particles generated primarily by construction activities, road dust and vehicular movement, which are among the major contributors to air pollution in rapidly growing urban areas.
According to reports, the machines operate continuously throughout the day and night, processing large volumes of air by drawing in polluted air and separating particulate matter before releasing cleaner air back into the surroundings. Unlike conventional air purification systems that rely on replaceable filters, these units reportedly use internal air pressure and kinetic energy mechanisms to trap dust particles, reducing maintenance requirements and operational costs.
The initiative comes at a time when construction activity and increasing traffic volumes have led to concerns about dust pollution in several parts of the city. Residents living near construction sites and busy roads have welcomed the deployment of the machines, expressing hope that the technology will help reduce airborne dust and improve local air quality.
Environmental experts note that controlling dust at the source is a crucial component of urban pollution management. If the new systems demonstrate effectiveness under real-world conditions, similar installations could be expanded to major construction corridors, traffic intersections and other pollution-prone locations across the city.
The project reflects Bhubaneswar’s growing focus on sustainable urban management and environmental protection. Alongside waste management initiatives, green infrastructure development and pollution control measures, the dust collectors represent another effort by civic authorities to enhance the quality of life for residents.
While the long-term impact of the technology will depend on performance data and operational outcomes, the initiative has already generated public interest as a potentially innovative solution to one of the city’s persistent environmental challenges.
As Bhubaneswar continues to expand and modernize, measures aimed at reducing dust pollution and improving air quality are expected to play an increasingly important role in creating a cleaner, healthier and more livable urban environment.
