Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has stepped up cyclone preparedness as an upper-air cyclonic circulation that emerged over the North Andaman Sea on September 18 is expected to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area around the evening of September 19, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the system is likely to intensify gradually and move west-northwestwards towards the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast over the following three to four days.
The minister said rainfall is expected across Odisha, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, with 20 districts placed under yellow-category warning. He said the state administration is closely monitoring the system and reviewing preparedness measures.
Pujari said discussions were held with IMD officials, including regional representatives in Odisha, and district collectors have been instructed to remain fully prepared for any eventuality.
The IMD’s September 18 coastal bulletin confirmed the circulation’s emergence over the North Andaman Sea and forecast the likely formation of the low-pressure area on September 19.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the system closely as its intensity and track become clearer.
