Odisha Dy CM Pravati Parida Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Over ‘Girls Should Not Go Out at Night’ Remark

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Sunday strongly condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent remark suggesting that “girls should not go out at night,” calling it regressive and disappointing.

Speaking to reporters in Bhubaneswar, Parida said that such statements from a woman leader of national prominence send a wrong message about women’s rights and safety.

“Instead of restricting girls, leaders should ensure their safety and empowerment. Freedom and security are basic rights, not privileges,” Parida said.

Banerjee’s comments came while addressing the media following a late-night assault case in Kolkata, where she remarked that girls should avoid going out late at night for their own safety. The statement has sparked widespread backlash from women’s groups, opposition leaders, and social activists who accused her of victim-blaming.

Parida further emphasized that ensuring women’s safety is the responsibility of the government and urged leaders to make constructive statements that promote equality and empowerment.

The controversy has once again reignited national discussions on women’s safety, freedom, and the accountability of public officials in shaping gender-sensitive narratives.
