Bhubaneswar: Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj announced on Thursday that the State Government will roll out a week-long awareness campaign across colleges and universities to promote health, fitness, and nutrition among students while curbing substance abuse on campuses.
The initiative comes in line with the University Grants Commission (UGC)’s recent directive to ensure drug-free educational environments and establish an Anti-Drugs Inspector in every higher education institution.
Focus on Health, Nutrition and Monitoring
Minister Suraj said the campaign will include interactive discussions, yoga sessions, physical fitness activities, and nutrition awareness programmes aimed at creating a positive and disciplined campus culture.
“As per the guidelines issued by the UGC and the government’s plans, it is essential to create awareness among students about keeping educational campuses free from substance abuse. We will conduct week-long programmes across various colleges and universities, focusing on discussions, yoga sessions, and physical fitness,”
said Minister Suraj.
The campaign also emphasises promoting nutritious food habits among students and incorporating peer-led initiatives to encourage healthy living.
The Higher Education Department will coordinate with universities, local administrations, and law enforcement agencies to ensure the success of the drive. Officials said that periodic monitoring and reporting mechanisms will be put in place to track progress and identify areas requiring further intervention.
Education experts have welcomed the step, calling it a “timely and holistic” approach that addresses both prevention and wellness within academic environments.
