Bhubaneswar: India’s mounting struggles in Test cricket have intensified scrutiny on head coach Gautam Gambhir after the team slumped to its second consecutive home whitewash, this time against South Africa, following last year’s 0–2 defeat to New Zealand. The downturn is stark: India has lost 10 of the 18 Tests under Gambhir, raising serious concerns about direction, selection consistency and the team’s long-term red-ball strategy.
Former Cricketers Slam Selection Instability
Criticism has poured in from several former India players.
Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble openly questioned the “frequent chopping and changing” in the Test lineup, arguing that such instability has eroded confidence and clarity within the side. They also faulted Gambhir’s inclination toward picking all-rounders over format-specific specialists, a move they believe dilutes the depth and discipline required in Test cricket.
According to them, India’s traditional Test strengths—batting resilience, specialist spinners, and a settled core—have been compromised in pursuit of flexibility.
Gambhir: ‘Test Cricket Needs Tough Characters, Not Flamboyance’
Responding to the criticism, Gambhir insisted that the team’s approach is rooted in long-term thinking rather than short-term results.
“You don’t need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket,” he said.
“What we need is tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers.”
He argued that the squad is in a learning phase, and developing temperament takes time. “I am the same guy who got results in England, who won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning,” Gambhir added.
‘Indian Cricket Is Important, I Am Not’
Amid calls for his removal, Gambhir reiterated that the decision on his future rests solely with the BCCI.
“It is for the BCCI to decide. I have said this before as well — Indian cricket is important, I am not,” he said, positioning himself as a facilitator rather than the centre of the system.
Takes Accountability for Decline
In a rare admission, Gambhir also accepted responsibility for the slide.
“The blame lies with everyone and starts with me,” he acknowledged.
BCCI Faces Difficult Questions
With India’s once impregnable home record now dented by consecutive whitewashes, the BCCI faces urgent questions like:
-
Should India pivot back to a more specialist-driven Test structure?
-
Is Gambhir’s long-term “tough character” model compatible with immediate competitive demands?
-
And most importantly, how does Indian cricket rebuild confidence ahead of upcoming Test commitments?
For now, Gambhir remains defiant yet reflective — but the pressure is unmistakably mounting.
