Bhubaneswar: India has officially secured the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking the event’s return to the country after two decades. The global body, Commonwealth Sport, confirmed Ahmedabad as the host city, placing India once again at the centre of international athletics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the milestone in a post on X, writing:
“Delighted that India has won the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030! Congratulations to the people of India and the sporting ecosystem. It is our collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map. With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to be celebrating these historic games with great enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming the world!”
Ahmedabad Set to Become Global Sports Hub
This will be India’s first Commonwealth Games since New Delhi hosted the 2010 edition. Ahmedabad—already equipped with world-class infrastructure and home to the Narendra Modi Stadium—will now receive renewed international attention. Two major projects, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and a state-of-the-art sports hub at Karai near Gandhinagar, are scheduled for completion between 2028 and 2029, aligning perfectly with the Games’ preparations.
Yoga May Make Its Commonwealth Debut
As host nation, India can recommend up to two additional sports for inclusion in the Games. Officials have hinted that Yoga is a prime contender, with an aim to introduce the ancient Indian discipline to the global sporting arena. India is also pushing for the reinstatement of core disciplines such as wrestling, shooting, hockey, badminton, and T20 cricket, which were omitted from the 2026 Games roster.
A Strategic Triumph for India’s Sporting Vision
The announcement has been widely hailed as a strategic victory for the country’s expanding sporting ambitions. With major infrastructure nearing completion and international backing secured, the 2030 Games are expected to showcase India’s readiness to step into a larger global leadership role in sports.
