Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a new waste management initiative mandating four separate dustbins for households and establishments to strengthen source-level waste segregation across the city.
Under the new system, residents will be required to segregate waste into four categories:
-
Green bin: Wet/biodegradable waste
-
Blue bin: Dry/recyclable waste
-
Red bin: Sanitary waste, including sanitary napkins
-
Black bin: Hazardous waste
Officials said the initiative is part of Bhubaneswar’s push to improve its cleanliness ranking and strengthen solid waste management practices under national urban sanitation benchmarks.
The municipal corporation plans to conduct awareness campaigns involving resident welfare associations, schools, self-help groups, and community volunteers to ensure citizen participation and compliance.
BMC authorities emphasised that proper segregation at source is crucial for efficient recycling, composting, and safe disposal, reducing landfill burden and improving environmental outcomes.
