Bhubaneswar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday informed the Lok Sabha that the census process in the country has begun and will include caste-based data collection.
Addressing the House, Shah said the government has decided to conduct a caste census alongside the general enumeration exercise. “I want to inform the entire country that the census process has already begun… enumeration is being carried out along with caste data,” he stated.
The announcement marks a significant development in India’s demographic data collection, as caste-based enumeration has long been a subject of political and policy debate.
Officials said the inclusion of caste data is expected to provide deeper insights into social and economic conditions across communities, potentially influencing future welfare policies and reservation frameworks.
Further details on methodology, timelines, and implementation are expected to be clarified as the census exercise progresses.
