Odisha Launches Caravan Tourism At Major Eco-Tourism Destinations

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest department has launched caravan tourism facilities at several prominent eco-tourism destinations across the state in a move aimed at promoting sustainable travel while preserving ecological balance.

Under the initiative, caravan tourism will be introduced at seven eco-tourism sites, including the Similipal Tiger Reserve and Bhitarkanika National Park, two of the state’s most important wildlife and biodiversity zones.

Officials said dedicated caravan parks with minimal and temporary infrastructure will be developed at selected locations to ensure that tourism activities do not adversely affect forest ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

The Forest department has framed strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing caravan operations, including guidelines for waste disposal, wildlife safety, noise control, parking regulations, and restrictions on vehicle capacity within eco-sensitive areas.

Authorities stated that the initiative is designed to encourage nature-based tourism experiences while maintaining strict environmental safeguards. Regulations have also been introduced regarding tourist conduct, designated parking areas, and movement of caravans within protected zones.

Bookings for caravan tourism will be managed through the Ecotour Odisha portal, enabling tourists to reserve caravan slots and access related services online.

Officials said revenue generated from the initiative will be distributed among infrastructure maintenance, local community development, and the state ecotourism society to ensure long-term sustainability and community participation.

The move is expected to strengthen Odisha’s growing eco-tourism sector by offering travellers a new mode of nature tourism while supporting conservation-oriented tourism management practices across protected forest regions.
