Odisha Zoos Implement Special Measures To Protect Animals From Extreme Summer Heat

Bhubaneswar: Authorities at Nandankanan Zoological Park and Sambalpur Zoo have introduced extensive summer heat mitigation measures to protect animals and birds from rising temperatures and severe heat wave conditions across Odisha.

Zoo officials said special arrangements have been made to ensure animal comfort and prevent heat-related stress during the peak summer season.

As part of the measures, large animals such as tigers, lions, and bears are being provided with ice blocks to help them stay cool. Coolers and ventilation systems have also been installed in enclosures housing sensitive species, including chimpanzees and other primates.

For reptiles and certain bird enclosures, foggers and misting systems are being used regularly to reduce enclosure temperatures and maintain humidity levels.

Authorities have additionally installed green shade nets, straw coverings, bamboo shelters, and temporary cooling structures across several animal enclosures to minimize direct exposure to sunlight.

Frequent water sprinkling and showering arrangements are also being carried out throughout the day to maintain cooler surroundings for the animals.

Zoo veterinarians said dietary modifications have been introduced as part of the summer care strategy. Animals are being provided with hydrating seasonal fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, and other water-rich foods to help maintain hydration levels.

Health monitoring has also been intensified, with veterinary teams conducting medical inspections and behavioural assessments twice daily to detect signs of dehydration, heat stress, or illness at an early stage.

Officials stated that the measures will continue throughout the summer season to ensure the well-being and safety of wildlife housed in the zoological parks amid rising temperatures across the state.
