Odisha Introduces Plus II Science Education in Odia to Improve Accessibility

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards promoting inclusive education, the Odisha government has decided to introduce Plus II Science education in the Odia language from the current academic session. The initiative aims to make science learning more accessible to students from Odia-medium schools and encourage greater participation in science streams.

Under the new policy, students will be provided with science textbooks in Odia and will have the option to write their examinations in the mother tongue. The move is intended to remove language-related barriers that often discourage students from opting for science courses, leading to vacant seats in higher secondary institutions.

To ensure effective implementation, the government has planned specialized training programs for teachers. Efforts are also being made to provide Odia-language question papers for national-level entrance examinations, enabling students to compete on an equal footing.

In addition, free online learning resources in Odia will be made available to support students and strengthen science education across the state.

Education experts believe the initiative will help bridge the gap between language and learning, improve student confidence, and boost enrollment in Plus II Science courses, particularly among rural and first-generation learners.

The decision reflects the state’s commitment to strengthening mother-tongue-based education while expanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in science and technology.
