Fire Erupts in Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary Near Puri; Authorities Contain Blaze, Assess Damage

Bhubaneswar: A fire broke out in the Talabania region of the Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary near Puri on Friday night, scorching a section of dry forest and prompting an immediate response from fire and forest officials concerned about the safety of wildlife in the area.

The blaze spread through dry vegetation within the sanctuary, an ecologically sensitive zone known for frequent deer movement and its role as an important grazing corridor. Fire Services personnel rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident and successfully brought the flames under control before they could spread further into the forest.

Videos circulating from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the sanctuary as flames moved rapidly across the dry forest floor, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of the area during the dry season.

Forest officials have launched a preliminary assessment to determine the extent of the damage caused by the fire. The exact cause of the blaze has not yet been established, and authorities are investigating whether it resulted from natural factors, human activity, or accidental ignition.

While no wildlife casualties have been officially reported so far, the incident has sparked concern among local residents, environmentalists, and conservation groups. The sanctuary is home to a variety of flora and fauna and serves as an important ecological buffer along Odisha’s coast.

Officials said teams are continuing to monitor the affected area to prevent any re-ignition and to evaluate the impact on vegetation and wildlife habitats. Surveillance has also been intensified across vulnerable sections of the sanctuary as a precautionary measure.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of protecting forest ecosystems from fire outbreaks, particularly during periods of dry weather when vegetation becomes highly combustible. Authorities have urged visitors and local communities to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could trigger forest fires.

Efforts are now focused on ensuring ecological recovery in the affected zone while strengthening preventive measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
