Centre Approves National Gallery of Modern Art Branch in Bhubaneswar with ₹630 Crore Investment

Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to Odisha’s cultural and artistic landscape, the Centre has approved the establishment of a branch of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Bhubaneswar with a proposed investment of ₹630 crore.

The Ministry of Culture formally communicated its intention to set up the prestigious institution in the Odisha capital on May 29, 2026. The decision follows sustained efforts and requests made by Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who had urged the Centre to establish a national-level art institution in the state.

As part of the process, the Odisha Government has been requested to identify and provide suitable land for the project. Once the site is finalized, detailed planning and construction activities are expected to commence.

The proposed NGMA branch is expected to serve as a major centre for modern and contemporary art, providing a platform for exhibitions, cultural exchanges, educational programs, research activities, and the promotion of artistic talent. It will also help showcase the rich artistic heritage of Odisha alongside works from leading Indian and international artists.

Cultural experts believe the establishment of the gallery will significantly enhance Bhubaneswar’s profile as a cultural destination and create new opportunities for artists, students, researchers, and art enthusiasts. The project is also expected to boost cultural tourism and contribute to the city’s growing reputation as a hub for heritage, education, and creative industries.

The National Gallery of Modern Art, one of India’s premier institutions dedicated to modern art, currently operates major centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The addition of a branch in Bhubaneswar would mark a significant expansion of the institution’s presence and bring world-class art infrastructure to eastern India.

Officials said the project reflects the Centre’s commitment to strengthening cultural institutions across the country while promoting regional artistic traditions and expanding public access to art and heritage.
