Bhubaneswar: A toxic ammonia gas leak from a cold storage facility in the Aiginia market area of Bhubaneswar late on February 26, 2026, sparked panic among residents and shopkeepers, leading to swift evacuation and emergency containment measures.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Khandagiri Police Station, where locals reported a strong ammonia smell early in the morning and alerted authorities over fears of a potential health hazard.
Fire services personnel and a specialised strike force team rushed to the site. As a precautionary measure, residents living in close proximity to the facility were evacuated to safer locations. Firefighters, wearing protective gear, entered the premises to trace the source of the leak.
Officials identified the cause as faulty packing in the ammonia pipeline valve. After sustained efforts, the leak was sealed. Teams also sprayed a fine mist to neutralise the gas and used water to prevent further spread in the surrounding area.
After nearly three hours of operation, the situation was brought under control and residents were allowed to return to their homes once safety was confirmed.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the incident and assess compliance with safety protocols at the facility.
