Bihar Government Proposes Restrictions on Meat and Fish Sales Near Schools and Religious Sites

Bhubaneswar: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha has announced that the state government plans to ban the sale of meat and fish near educational and religious institutions, as well as in crowded public spaces. The proposal, he said, is driven by health concerns and an aim to curb violent tendencies among children.

The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to regulate food vending practices and maintain public order in sensitive areas. According to Sinha, restricting meat and fish outlets around schools and religious places would contribute to a cleaner environment and align with cultural sensitivities in such zones.

However, the proposal has sparked debate among stakeholders, including traders, civil rights groups, and opposition parties, who argue that such restrictions could affect livelihoods and raise concerns over dietary freedom and secular principles.

The state government is expected to outline detailed guidelines and enforcement mechanisms if the proposal is formally implemented.
