Bhubaneswar: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticised the Odisha government’s proposal to introduce a biometric attendance system for college students, describing it as an unnecessary and intimidating measure.
BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty questioned the proposal, pointing out that biometric attendance has not yet been implemented for teachers and other college staff. He termed the move a “Tughlaq policy” and alleged that the government was targeting students instead of addressing fundamental problems in higher education.
The BJD also raised concerns over the deteriorating academic environment, including shortages of teachers and inadequate infrastructure and facilities in colleges.
The party further questioned the implementation of the government’s free education scheme, particularly seeking clarity on how students enrolled under self-financing systems would be covered.
The BJD said the government should focus on improving teaching facilities, filling vacant posts and strengthening the academic environment rather than imposing measures that could put additional pressure on students.
