Bhubaneswar: The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to alter the name of the State of “Kerala” to “Keralam”, setting in motion the constitutional process required for a formal name change.
Following Cabinet approval, the President of India will refer the proposed legislation — the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 — to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for expressing its views, as mandated under the proviso to Article 3 of the Constitution of India.
After receiving the State Assembly’s views, the Government of India will take further steps. The President’s recommendation will then be obtained for introducing the Bill in Parliament to formally change the name of the State from “Kerala” to “Keralam”.
The proposed renaming aligns with the state government’s earlier resolution seeking the adoption of the Malayalam name “Keralam” in place of the anglicised “Kerala.” The final decision will rest with Parliament after completion of the constitutional procedure.
