Bhubaneswar: Odisha continues to reel under intense winter conditions as night temperatures plunged sharply across the state, accompanied by persistent dense fog in several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that cold wave conditions are likely to persist for another three days.
A yellow warning has been issued for isolated pockets in Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Balasore, Khurda, Angul, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sonepur and Nabarangpur districts till the morning of January 9. Cold wave conditions are also expected to continue in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Sambalpur during the subsequent 24 hours.
IMD stated that while there is unlikely to be any major change in minimum temperatures over the next three days, night temperatures may rise by 2–3°C during the following two days before gradually falling again.
In the past 24 hours, minimum temperatures dipped below 10°C at 22 locations across the state. G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district recorded the lowest temperature at 3°C. Semiliguda in Koraput followed at 4.1°C, while Phulbani recorded 5°C. Industrial towns Rourkela and Jharsuguda also experienced severe chill with minimum temperatures of 5.1°C and 5.4°C, respectively.
Several other regions reported temperatures between 7°C and 8°C, including Daringbadi (7°C), Kirei (7.4°C), Keonjhar (7.6°C), Chiplima in Sambalpur (7.7°C), Sundargarh (7.8°C), Bhawanipatna (7.8°C) and Angul (8°C).
Urban centres were not spared either. Cuttack recorded a minimum temperature of 9.6°C, while Bhubaneswar witnessed its coldest night of the season at 10.2°C — a steep drop of 7.2 degrees over just three days.
Authorities have advised residents, particularly in vulnerable districts, to remain cautious as dense fog and cold conditions continue to disrupt daily life.
