Indian Onions Emerge as ‘Red Gold’, Powering India’s Global Export Surge

Bhubaneswar: Indian onions have earned the moniker “Red Gold” in several African nations, underscoring their growing importance as a high-value agricultural export and reinforcing India’s position as a global leader in onion trade.

In 2025, India emerged as the world’s largest onion exporter, with shipments crossing 1.1 million tonnes. The demand has been driven by the superior quality, strong pungency and long shelf life of Indian onion varieties, which are well-suited for long-distance transportation and diverse culinary uses across international markets.

Why Indian Onions Command Premium Value

Indian onions are particularly prized for their robust flavour and durability. Light red varieties retain freshness even after extended shipping periods, making them ideal for African and Middle Eastern markets. Among premium offerings, the Bangalore Rose Onion stands out for its deep scarlet colour and intense pungency, fetching strong demand in high-value segments.

Export Outlook and Policy Support

Export prospects remain strong for 2025–26, with projections ranging between 1.8 and 2.2 million tonnes. A key boost has come from policy support, notably the removal of the 20 per cent export duty with effect from April 1, 2025, which has enhanced India’s competitiveness in global markets.

Major onion-producing states continue to anchor this growth, led by Maharashtra, often referred to as India’s onion capital, along with Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

Key International Markets

Africa has emerged as a major growth region, where Indian onions are valued both for quality and reliability of supply. In South Asia, Bangladesh remains the largest importer, followed by Sri Lanka and Nepal. Demand is also strong across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, as well as in the Middle East, particularly the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.

Strengthening Farmers and Trade Balance

Officials and trade experts note that the rising global demand for Indian onions is improving farmer incomes, supporting rural livelihoods and contributing positively to India’s agricultural exports and trade balance.

Once considered a purely domestic staple, Indian onions have now become a strategic export commodity—earning global recognition and truly living up to their reputation as “Red Gold” in international markets.
