Indian Railways Introduces Airline-Style Baggage Checks at Select Stations

Bhubaneswar: Indian Railways is set to introduce airline-style baggage screening and weight checks at select major stations across the country as part of its efforts to enhance passenger safety, reduce congestion, and improve overall travel efficiency.

Under the new system, passengers’ luggage will be screened and weighed before boarding, similar to procedures followed at airports. The initiative applies to all travel classes—from First AC to General Class—with clearly defined baggage limits to ensure uniform enforcement and smoother operations.

According to railway officials, the prescribed class-wise baggage limits are:

  • First AC: 70 kg

  • AC Two Tier: 50 kg

  • AC Three Tier and Sleeper: 40 kg

  • General Class: 35 kg

To facilitate the implementation, electronic weighing machines are being installed at key stations, including Prayagraj, Kanpur, Mirzapur, and Aligarh, with more locations expected to be covered in subsequent phases. Passengers carrying luggage beyond the permitted weight will be required to pay additional charges or face penalties, as per railway norms.

Railway authorities said the move aims to curb excessive luggage that often leads to platform overcrowding, delays during boarding, and safety hazards. By regulating baggage, the railways expect to streamline passenger movement, reduce operational strain on staff, and improve emergency response readiness.

“This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader modernisation drive to bring discipline, efficiency, and safety in line with global best practices,” a senior official said, adding that the measures will significantly enhance the passenger experience, particularly at high-footfall stations.

The rollout marks another step in Indian Railways’ ongoing transformation, focusing on safer, cleaner, and more organised travel for millions of passengers nationwide.
