Mahaprasad Row at Puri Jagannath Temple: Servitors Threaten to Halt Cooking Over VIP Darshan Disruption

Bhubaneswar: A dispute over ritual management has triggered fresh tensions at the revered Shree Jagannath Temple, with servitors responsible for preparing the temple’s sacred Mahaprasad warning they may suspend cooking if their demands are not addressed within a week.

Members of the Suar-Mahasuar Nijog, the traditional servitor body entrusted with preparing Mahaprasad for the deities and devotees, staged a demonstration near the temple’s Lions’ Gate (Singhadwara) on Monday. The protest followed an incident on February 28 that allegedly disrupted the temple’s ritual schedule.

Ritual Delay Sparks Outrage

According to the servitors, daily rituals for the presiding deities—Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra—were delayed by several hours after temple authorities permitted certain VIPs to enter for special darshan through the Jay-Vijay Dwar.

Servitors claim the special entry disrupted the tightly regulated ritual timetable of the shrine, which in turn delayed the preparation and distribution of Mahaprasad. Devotees reportedly waited more than four hours for the sacred offering.

Servitors’ Demands

In response, the Suar-Mahasuar Nijog has placed two key demands before the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA):

  • ₹25 lakh compensation for financial losses caused by the delayed cooking and distribution of Mahaprasad.

  • Disciplinary action against those responsible for allowing VIP access that disrupted the ritual schedule.

The Nijog has given the temple administration seven days to respond.

Threat to Suspend Mahaprasad Cooking

If their demands are not met within the stipulated period, the servitors have warned they will stop cooking Mahaprasad altogether—a move that could severely impact the temple’s daily functioning and the experience of thousands of pilgrims who visit the shrine each day.

Mahaprasad, prepared in the temple’s traditional kitchens using centuries-old methods, is considered sacred and is consumed by millions of devotees annually.

Management vs. Tradition

The incident has reignited a long-running debate over VIP privileges versus traditional ritual discipline at one of India’s holiest shrines. With religious customs, temple administration, and the expectations of pilgrims intersecting, the coming days will determine whether the dispute escalates further or is resolved through dialogue.
