Bhubaneswar: Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on Sunday marked 54 years of statehood, commemorating their transition from Union Territories to full-fledged states in 1972 under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act. The day was observed with official messages, cultural programmes and reflections on the region’s journey and challenges.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called for unity and harmony, urging people to rise above differences and work collectively for peace and development. His appeal carried particular significance as the state continues to grapple with ethnic tensions that have claimed more than 260 lives since May 2023.
Leaders from across the political spectrum extended greetings. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge praised the three states for their rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and contributions to the nation’s social and cultural fabric.
Meghalaya’s celebrations highlighted its unique traditions, including indigenous dances and the famed living root bridges, while Tripura reflected on its royal heritage and historical palaces. Cultural performances and official events across the three states showcased local art forms and reaffirmed regional pride.
The statehood anniversary served both as a moment of celebration and introspection, underscoring the progress achieved over five decades while highlighting the need for sustained efforts toward peace, inclusivity and development in India’s Northeast.
