Bhubaneswar: A powerful Nor’wester tornado caused widespread destruction in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday, leaving a trail of damage, injuries and disruption in several areas.
According to initial reports, the worst-affected location was Kia village in Karanjia, where strong winds triggered panic among residents and blew off roofs of numerous mud and thatched houses.
Heavy Damage and Injuries
Officials said more than 70 houses were damaged in the storm, while at least 10 people sustained injuries, with one person reported to be in critical condition.
The sudden and intense weather event caught residents off guard, forcing many to rush for shelter as the storm swept through the village.
Infrastructure Hit, Power Supply Disrupted
The tornado also uprooted several large trees and electric poles, leading to power outages and blocking key roads in the affected areas. Authorities are working to clear debris and restore essential services.
Vehicular movement was severely impacted during the storm. In a dramatic incident, an auto-rickshaw was reportedly blown off the road and into a nearby pond, highlighting the intensity of the winds.
Relief and Assessment Underway
Local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage and are expected to roll out relief and assistance measures for affected families.
Officials said priority is being given to restoring electricity, clearing roads and providing immediate aid to those injured and displaced by the storm.
