The Department of Higher Education has asked universities and colleges to implement the guidelines of the Manodarpan initiative, in line with the advisory issued by the Ministry of Education.

Focus on Mental Well-being

The initiative is designed to address stress, anxiety, emotional distress and other mental health challenges among students, while promoting a safe, inclusive and supportive academic environment.

Counsellors and Support Systems

Institutions have been instructed to:

  • Appoint trained mentors and counsellors (internal or external)

  • Establish robust counselling and mentoring mechanisms

  • Display helpline numbers and Manodarpan details across campuses and online platforms

Awareness and Peer Support

Colleges and universities will also:

  • Form peer support groups and student support cells

  • Conduct regular awareness programmes on mental health and life skills

  • Play short mental health awareness videos in hostels and common areas

Authorities have emphasised periodic sharing of stress management guidelines and resources through official communication channels.

Inclusive Approach

Special attention will be given to:

  • Differently-abled students

  • Students facing academic, emotional or social challenges

Parents will also be involved through parent-teacher interactions, while faculty members will be trained to regularly check on students’ well-being and guide them to appropriate support systems.

Strengthening Campus Ecosystem

Officials said the initiative aims to create a holistic campus support ecosystem, ensuring that students have access to timely psychological assistance and guidance.

The move reflects a growing focus on mental health in education, recognising it as a key factor in academic success and overall development.
