Bhubaneswar: After a year’s absence, Odisha’s tableau will return to the Republic Day parade in 2026, with the Ministry of Defence approving the state’s proposal to participate in the national event alongside tableaux from 16 other states and Union Territories, official sources said.
The Centre has directed the chief secretaries of all selected states to finalise and complete their tableaux by January 19, 2026, to facilitate rehearsals and logistical preparations ahead of the parade.
Odisha’s inclusion is part of the rotational participation system (2024–2026) introduced by the Defence Ministry to ensure equitable representation of all states and UTs. The mechanism, agreed upon by 28 states and Union Territories, allows every region to showcase its unique cultural and social identity over a three-year cycle.
According to sources, the Odisha government plans to highlight the state’s rich cultural traditions and artistic legacy, with a focus on local craftsmanship, folklore, and heritage landmarks. The tableau is expected to prominently feature the Konark Sun Temple, renowned for its architectural grandeur and intricate stone carvings, along with traditional art forms such as Pattachitra, silver filigree (Tarakasi), and products like Koraput coffee.
Popular folk dance Chaiti Ghoda Nacha will also be staged as part of the presentation, adding a dynamic cultural element to the tableau.
This year’s Republic Day parade will revolve around two overarching themes — ‘The Mantra of Self-Reliance – Vande Mataram’ and ‘The Mantra of Prosperity – Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ — reflecting India’s growing emphasis on indigenous innovation, cultural confidence, and economic strength.
Officials said Odisha’s tableau aims to align with these themes while projecting the state’s heritage with pride on the national stage.
