Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced the establishment of a dedicated Chandua Bazaar in Pipili to rejuvenate the traditional applique craft sector that has faced setbacks following the construction of the NH-316 bypass.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement during the presentation of the state budget, stating that the new market complex will be developed near the Pipili toll plaza with modern amenities to attract tourists and restore commercial activity in the area.
Impact of the Bypass
Pipili, located along the Bhubaneswar–Puri corridor, has long been renowned for its vibrant applique craft, locally known as Chandua. However, the diversion of traffic through the NH-316 bypass significantly reduced tourist footfall in the traditional marketplace, leading to a decline in sales for artisans.
The craft — officially recognised with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag as Pipili Chandua — holds deep cultural significance and is closely associated with rituals and decorative traditions of the Jagannath Temple. Ornamental canopies, umbrellas, lampshades, wall hangings and festival décor from Pipili are widely used during religious and cultural events.
Support for Artisan Families
Around 500 artisan families depend on applique work for their livelihood. Officials indicated that nearly 100 shops are already under construction near the bypass, aiming to reposition the craft cluster along the new traffic route.
The proposed Chandua Bazaar is expected to:
-
Improve visibility for artisans
-
Provide structured marketing infrastructure
-
Offer modern tourist-friendly facilities
-
Create a dedicated branding space for the GI-tagged craft
-
Preserve the authenticity of the centuries-old tradition
Boost to Heritage Tourism
By situating the bazaar strategically near the toll plaza, the government aims to integrate the craft hub with Odisha’s broader spiritual and tourism circuit connecting Bhubaneswar, Pipili and Puri.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to protect traditional livelihoods while adapting to changing infrastructure dynamics. If executed effectively, the Chandua Bazaar could restore economic stability to Pipili’s artisan community and strengthen Odisha’s heritage tourism ecosystem.
