Bhubaneswar: The famous Manikapatna curd from Odisha is set to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, with the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) finalising the application process.
Officials said the GI recognition would formally acknowledge the unique identity and traditional preparation methods of the curd produced in Manikapatna, a coastal village in the district of Puri.
Deep Cultural and Religious Roots
Manikapatna curd is closely associated with a popular legend linked to Jagannath of the Shree Jagannath Temple. According to local lore, a woman named Manika Gauduni once offered curd to Lord Jagannath during his journey, a story that has since become an integral part of the region’s cultural and religious heritage.
Unique Taste and Traditional Preparation
The curd is traditionally prepared using milk from indigenous buffaloes reared in the Puri region, giving it a distinct thick texture, rich flavour, and notable nutritional value. Its preparation follows age-old techniques passed down through generations in the village.
Boost for Local Economy
Experts believe that obtaining a GI tag will significantly enhance the product’s national recognition and market value, helping protect its authenticity while creating new economic opportunities for local dairy farmers and producers.
If granted, the GI tag would place Manikapatna curd among other traditional products whose origin and unique qualities are legally recognised and protected, strengthening Odisha’s rich culinary and cultural heritage.
