Viral Post Highlights Eco-Friendly Practices at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar: A social media post by Manas Muduli on X has gone viral, bringing widespread attention to the eco-conscious initiatives at Nandankanan Zoological Park.

The post, which has garnered over 110,000 views, showcases simple yet effective measures adopted by the zoo to curb plastic waste and promote environmental responsibility among visitors.

Calling it “one of the best things” about the zoo, Muduli highlighted a unique deposit-based system for plastic bottles. Visitors carrying plastic water bottles are required to pay a refundable deposit of ₹50, which is returned upon handing back the empty bottle while exiting the premises. The initiative encourages visitors to take accountability for their plastic waste and ensures it does not remain inside the park.

In addition, strict rules are in place to limit the entry of single-use plastics. Visitors bringing packaged food in plastic are required to transfer the contents into paper bags before entering the zoo. This proactive step helps prevent plastic waste from entering the premises altogether.

The viral post has sparked appreciation online, with many users praising the zoo’s practical and replicable approach to sustainability. Nandankanan Zoological Park, already known for its conservation efforts, is now being lauded for setting an example in eco-friendly visitor management practices.
