Bhubaneswar, Odisha: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has struck gas in the Mahanadi Deepwater Basin, around 43 km off the Konark coast, marking a significant development for Odisha’s offshore energy prospects.
The exploration well was drilled to a target depth of 1,623 metres and has reportedly been flowing gas with encouraging flow rates and reservoir pressure for the past three days.
The discovery’s proximity to the Odisha coast could offer potential for early monetisation, subject to further appraisal, assessment of the reservoir and commercial evaluation.
The development is expected to add momentum to exploration of Odisha’s offshore energy resources and could strengthen the state’s role in India’s expanding domestic energy sector.
