Bhubaneswar: India is growing economically, in international forums, militarily and at the same time crimes in the country is also rising. Rapes, murders, extortion are on a unusual rise. irrespective of the fact that whichever political party is in power crimes take its own stride. Crimes like rapes, gang rape, murder occur so much in number that people are used to it. These crimes are treated as normal as a normal quarrel in neighborhood. Every seconds there is a rape case, murder case, kidnapping, threatenings and so on. So to say the media and the reporters also treat such cases another story to cover, a number hiker in TRP chart.
These heinous crimes are committed time and again, one after another. Every time there is a rape case, murder case, we think this time the punishment will be so brutal that nobody would dare to commit something of this sort ever again. But, alas, it never stops. One wonders, what could be the rout cause of not fearing of consequences and committing the same crime again and again. The criminals are no longer scared of getting arrested, facing the law and jailed. If a rape convicted is punished with death penalty. It will be given him after about 25years of imprisonment. Within such a long time period a person might as well die of any disease, or illness after living his whole life. On top of that our judicial system and its processes are so lengthy, time taking that the criminals can roam around, live their lives scot free forever may be. If there will be the provision that a criminal of rape and murder will be given death penalty within a time span of 6 months or one year, the crime rate would drop to a substantial extent.
Victim shaming and sensationalizing crimes is very common in our country. Both media and the common people are equal participants in this. The mindset is such that everybody starts pointing fingers towards the victim first in the guise of finding out the cause and effect. The memory of the people is also very short lived. People tend to discuss, debate, sensationalize, then forget conveniently.
The problem is not just with the judiciary but with the police as well. Our investigating teams are so lenient and carefree that they don’t even care to protect a crime scene at first place. Many high profile cases are left unsolved only due to the tampering of evidence. There are no strict action for entering into a prime crime spot during the ongoing investigation. The prominent players are here the media reporters. They behave like investing agencies, find evidence, clues and start passing judgements in
studios.
The unsolved cases are always open for speculations, forming unimaginable stories, theories that are far from reality. Then media hype makes the cases high profile, open to unnecessary scrutiny. High profile cases, such as the Arushi Murder case, lack of evidence led to a judgement that was not completely accurate. Talking about jails, they are no more considered as a place of punishment. If you have money jail can provide you five star hotel luxury. So crimes and criminals are far from afraid of committing any grievous sin in this country.
When we ponder over these aspects, many concerning conclusions come out like whether the agencies in our country are absolutely fair, is the judiciary doing its job correct, is the media operates as the fourth pillar, is democracy, free speech and human rights are overpowering justice, etc. It is our duty to think whether as people we should become more sensitized towards this matters. The agencies are working and get paid from the tax payers money. So every citizen has a justified rights to question how and what the system doing to investigate, and punish the actual perpetrators in curbing such crimes.
