Clashes Erupt During Durga Puja Immersion in Cuttack; Several Injured

Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Cuttack city late Tuesday night after violence broke out between two groups during a Durga Puja immersion procession. The clash, reportedly triggered by an argument over loud music, quickly escalated, prompting police intervention.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred near the Dargha Bazaar–Haathi Pokhari area when two processions converged. Heated arguments over sound levels turned violent, with both groups pelting stones and vandalising nearby property.

Police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Several people, including some police personnel, were injured in the incident and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In the aftermath, the Cuttack district administration imposed curfew-like restrictions in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation. Internet services were temporarily suspended in select localities to curb the spread of rumours and misinformation on social media.

Senior police officials, including the DCP and Collector, reached the spot to monitor the situation. Additional platoons of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.

“The situation is now under control. We have taken all necessary measures to ensure peace and prevent further disturbances,” said Cuttack DCP Pinak Mishra.

Authorities have appealed to citizens to maintain harmony and cooperate with law enforcement during the ongoing Durga Puja festivities.
