Bhubaneswar: In a significant urban expansion move, 71 villages on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar are set to be merged with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The proposal, long under consideration by the state government, has now gained momentum with the Housing and Urban Development Department officially notifying the Khordha District Collector to initiate the process.
According to officials, the merger will include 14 gram panchayats, bringing these areas under the administrative fold of the capital city. The move aims to ensure better urban infrastructure, civic amenities, and planned development in the rapidly growing peripheral zones of Bhubaneswar.
Once implemented, this expansion will significantly increase BMC’s jurisdiction, population base, and responsibility — marking a major step in Bhubaneswar’s transformation into a metropolitan city.
