Who Is Captain Smit Machchhar? Indian Pilot Praised After Flydubai Emergency

Bhubaneswar: Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian commercial pilot with more than a decade of aviation experience, has drawn international attention after his actions during a serious cockpit incident aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Machchhar was the captain of Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 174 people. During the flight on September 30, 2026, he was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar is reported to have helped regain access to the cockpit, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene. The aircraft was subsequently diverted and made an emergency landing at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with passengers and crew reported safe. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Machchhar has been a Flydubai captain since June 2022, having joined the airline after spending about 11 years with SpiceJet. Public professional information and media reports indicate that he has accumulated nearly 9,750 hours of flying experience, primarily on Boeing 737 aircraft.

His route into aviation was reportedly unconventional. According to media reports, Machchhar initially studied textile engineering with plans to join his family’s textile business. An aviation seminar he attended at the age of 19 sparked his interest in flying, eventually leading him to pursue a career as a commercial pilot.

Machchhar’s earlier career at SpiceJet included serving as a line training captain, a role involving the training and assessment of other pilots. He later joined Flydubai as a direct-entry captain, bringing his previous command experience to the Dubai-based airline.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s courage and presence of mind, saying his actions helped save lives and avert a major tragedy. Modi also said he had spoken to Machchhar’s family and enquired about his health.

Machchhar is currently recovering in a Saudi hospital and has been reported to be in stable condition. The incident remains under investigation, and details surrounding the cockpit confrontation are subject to the findings of the authorities.
