Bhubaneswar: Two simultaneous weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal have intensified the possibility of a rare winter cyclone, with meteorologists closely monitoring the evolving disturbance expected to influence parts of southern Odisha later this week.
According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre,
“The system is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours, and may strengthen into a cyclone within the following 48 hours. Its location will be the southwest Bay of Bengal.”
The IMD has confirmed that one of the developing systems is steadily gaining strength and could turn into a cyclone within 72 hours, though Odisha is unlikely to face a direct landfall. Despite this, the state may still experience notable weather changes.
What Odisha Can Expect
-
Light rainfall likely in southern districts within the next 48 hours.
-
Increased cloud cover across several regions.
-
Minimum temperatures may drop by 2–3°C as cold northeasterly winds strengthen behind the system.
State Preparedness
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said Odisha is fully prepared to handle any potential impact. Disaster response units and district administrations have been placed on alert to ensure timely action if conditions intensify.
The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and will issue further updates as its movement becomes clearer.
