Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar witnessed an unprecedented surge in liquor sales during the final week of 2025, with New Year celebrations driving consumption to record levels. Official data from the Excise Department shows that alcohol sales in the Odisha capital crossed ₹32 crore in just one week, marking one of the highest festive turnovers in recent years.

Between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve—popularly referred to as Zero Night—the city recorded the sale of nearly 2.5 lakh litres of foreign liquor and 1.5 lakh litres of country liquor. Beer consumption also rose sharply, with around 1.78 lakh litres sold during the same period.

Excise officials said demand peaked as clubs, pubs, bars and off-shops across the city saw heavy footfall, particularly in the evenings leading up to December 31. Many retail outlets reported brisk business, with extended operating hours and advance stocking to meet festive demand.

The spike in sales reflects Bhubaneswar’s growing nightlife and party culture, especially during year-end celebrations, when large numbers of residents and visitors gather for private parties and organised events. Hospitality and entertainment venues also contributed significantly to the surge, with New Year packages and Zero Night celebrations drawing crowds.

While the Excise Department noted the revenue boost as a positive outcome for the state exchequer, officials reiterated that strict enforcement measures were in place during the period to curb illegal sales and drunk driving. Increased checks and coordination with the police ensured that festivities passed without major incidents.

The record-breaking figures underline how year-end celebrations continue to play a major role in driving liquor consumption and excise revenues in the state capital.
