India U-19 Begin World Cup Campaign with Commanding Win Over USA

Bhubaneswar: Bulawayo, Zimbabwe: Defending five-time champions India made a confident start to their ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2026 campaign, registering a comprehensive victory over the USA in their Group B opener at Bulawayo on Thursday.

India captain Ayush Mhatre won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as fast bowler Patel delivered a match-winning performance. Exploiting seam movement and bounce, Patel dismantled the USA batting line-up, claiming the first five-wicket haul of the tournament and removing several key batters to put India firmly in control.

Rain interruptions subsequently impacted the match, leading to a revised target under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method. India were set 99 runs to win, which they chased down comfortably, reaching 99 for 4 in 17.2 overs.

The chase was anchored by Abhigyan Kundu, who remained unbeaten on 42, showing composure and maturity despite weather delays and periodic stoppages. His innings ensured there were no late hiccups as India crossed the line with ease.

For his outstanding bowling spell, Patel was named Player of the Match, underlining India’s all-round dominance in the contest.

With this victory, India have signaled their intent early in the tournament. The young Indian side will next face Bangladesh on January 17, as they look to build momentum in their quest for a sixth Under-19 World Cup title.
