Odisha to Establish ‘Nari Adalats’ for Speedy Justice for Women

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced the establishment of ‘Nari Adalats’ (women’s courts) at the village level to ensure faster access to justice for women and strengthen legal awareness within communities.

The initiative was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who said the women-led forums will function as mediation centres operated by trained volunteers known as ‘Nyaya Sakhis’ (Justice Friends). These volunteers will be equipped to guide, counsel and support women in resolving disputes at the grassroots level.

According to the plan, Nari Adalats will be set up in Anganwadi centres and community halls, making them easily accessible to women, particularly in rural areas. In the initial phase, the courts will focus on addressing cases related to dowry harassment, domestic violence and other family-related disputes.

The initiative aims not only to provide speedy and cost-effective justice but also to empower women through greater legal literacy and confidence to assert their rights. By encouraging dialogue and mediation within the community, the government hopes the Nari Adalats will reduce prolonged litigation and create a supportive local mechanism for women facing injustice.
