Andhra Pradesh to Launch World’s First Long-Range Drone Ambulance for Emergency Healthcare

Bhubaneswar: Andhra Pradesh is poised to revolutionize emergency medical care by partnering with the Dr. Kalam Advanced UAV Research Centre to develop the world’s first long-range, human-carrying drone ambulance. The initiative marks a significant leap toward achieving “zero-traffic” emergency response, especially in remote and hard-to-reach regions.

The drone ambulance is designed to carry a patient along with medical equipment, ensuring timely medical intervention during the crucial “Golden Hour.” With the first prototype scheduled to fly in the first week of May 2026, the project is set to place Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of drone-powered healthcare innovation globally.

Key Features of the Drone Ambulance

  • Carrying Capacity: Up to 150 kg (patient plus equipment)

  • Operational Range: Covers a 50 km radius

  • Cruising Altitude: 1,000–1,200 feet

  • Safety Systems: Includes autonomous emergency landing and fail-safe flight systems

Transforming Healthcare Access

The drone ambulance is expected to significantly improve emergency medical response in remote and tribal areas, where road access is limited and time is critical. Apart from patient evacuation, the drone is also expected to deliver medicines, vaccines, and medical supplies to isolated communities.

Officials said the project aligns with the state’s broader vision of integrating advanced technology into public health services. The partnership with the Dr. Kalam Advanced UAV Research Centre underscores Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to leveraging innovation for social impact.

A Global First in Medical Aviation

If successfully deployed, the drone ambulance will be a global first in long-range human-carrying UAVs dedicated to healthcare. Experts believe the project could set a benchmark for other states and countries exploring drone-based emergency services.

The prototype flight in May 2026 will be closely watched by medical professionals, aviation regulators, and technology enthusiasts as Andhra Pradesh leads the next wave of innovation in emergency healthcare delivery.
