Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced plans to set up dedicated shelter homes, to be called ‘Sahaya Gruha’, for differently-abled women and girls across the state under the existing SAHAYA scheme. The initiative aims to strengthen protection, care, and rehabilitation services for one of the most vulnerable sections of society.
According to official sources, the proposed Sahaya Gruhas will provide safe accommodation along with essential support services, including counselling, healthcare, skill development, and rehabilitation assistance. The shelters are intended to offer a secure and supportive environment for differently-abled women and girls who are in need of care and protection.
The government has issued directions to district collectors to assess the feasibility of establishing such facilities in their respective districts. Collectors have been asked to identify local requirements, available infrastructure, and gaps in existing support systems, and to submit detailed reports at the earliest to facilitate timely implementation.
However, the proposal does not cover certain districts, including Balasore, Ganjam, and Sundargarh, where similar arrangements or alternative mechanisms are already in place. Authorities said the focus is on districts where dedicated facilities for differently-abled women and girls are currently lacking.
The move reflects the state government’s broader commitment to inclusive welfare and social security, particularly for persons with disabilities. Once operational, Sahaya Gruhas are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring dignity, safety, and long-term rehabilitation for differently-abled women and girls across Odisha.
