India Observes 16th National Voters’ Day, Emphasises Youth Participation and Democratic Values

Bhubaneswar: India marked its 16th National Voters’ Day on January 25, commemorating the founding of the Election Commission of India in 1950, with a renewed focus on strengthening democratic participation. This year’s theme, “My India, My Vote,” highlighted the central role of citizens—especially first-time voters—in shaping the nation’s future.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message to youth volunteers and during the 130th episode of his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, described voting as the “soul of democracy.” He linked National Voters’ Day with the spirit of Republic Day, underscoring the responsibility of citizens to actively participate in the democratic process and safeguard constitutional values.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the main national समारोह in New Delhi, stressing that voting is a powerful medium through which citizens express their aspirations, hopes, and expectations from governance. She underlined the importance of informed and ethical participation to strengthen democratic institutions.

Leaders across political parties echoed similar sentiments, calling upon citizens—particularly young people—to register as voters and exercise their franchise responsibly. Special awareness campaigns, voter registration drives, and youth-centric initiatives were organised nationwide to encourage participation among newly eligible voters.

According to official estimates, more than one crore citizens who have recently turned 18 are eligible to be added to the electoral rolls this year. The Election Commission and associated organisations used the occasion to promote voter education, inclusivity, and the importance of free and fair elections.

National Voters’ Day continues to serve as a reminder of India’s democratic legacy and the collective responsibility of its citizens to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution.
