Odisha to Introduce AI-Powered Classrooms in Over 5,000 Schools

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is set to roll out artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled virtual classrooms and a digital assessment system across more than 5,000 secondary and higher secondary schools in the state, marking a major push toward technology-driven education.

The initiative, being implemented by the Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA), is aimed at bridging learning gaps for students from geographically remote and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By leveraging advanced digital tools, the programme seeks to ensure equitable access to quality education for students from Classes VI to XII.

Under the plan, schools will be equipped with AI-powered interactive panels connected to central broadcasting studios. These studios will transmit live and recorded lessons, enabling expert teachers to reach multiple classrooms simultaneously. Educational content will be delivered in both Odia and English to cater to diverse learning needs.

In addition to virtual teaching, the project includes a digital assessment platform designed to monitor student engagement, attention span, and participation during classes. This system will help teachers and administrators track learning outcomes more effectively and tailor interventions where required.

To address concerns around speed, connectivity, and data privacy, the programme will deploy Edge AI technology. This allows data to be processed locally within school systems, ensuring faster performance, limited dependence on continuous internet connectivity, and improved data security. Notably, student avatars will be used instead of photographs in assessment reports to further safeguard privacy.

Officials say the initiative represents a significant step toward modernising Odisha’s school education system and preparing students for a technology-driven future, while ensuring inclusivity and data protection remain central to the reform.
