Satkosia to Get ₹100-Crore State-Funded Ecotourism Upgrade

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a ₹100-crore ecotourism development project at Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary, aimed at creating world-class tourism infrastructure while safeguarding the region’s fragile ecosystem.

Official sources said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been cleared, with a total estimated investment of ₹99.75 crore, fully funded by the state government. The project is part of Odisha’s broader strategy to promote sustainable and responsible tourism in ecologically sensitive areas.

Under the plan, modern visitor facilities will be developed at key locations including Purunakote, Jagannathpur, Tikarpada, Baliput, Kusanga and Chhamundia. Proposed infrastructure includes food courts, floating jetties, canopy walks, watchtowers, river-view decks, and designated bonfire zones, designed to enhance visitor experience without disturbing wildlife habitats.

Officials said the initiative will focus on low-impact, nature-based tourism, ensuring conservation priorities remain intact while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities through employment and allied services.

The Satkosia project is expected to position the sanctuary as a flagship ecotourism destination in eastern India, reinforcing Odisha’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with economic development.
