Bhubaneswar: The Ministry of Railways has launched a new technology platform, ‘Rail Tech’, aimed at encouraging startups and innovators to develop solutions for operational and safety challenges across the railway network.
The portal seeks to crowdsource innovative technologies addressing key issues in safety, maintenance, and administrative efficiency, with a strong emphasis on the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Railway officials said the initiative is designed to integrate emerging technologies into core railway functions and modernise service delivery.
Under the scheme, Indian Railways will fund up to 50 per cent of the development cost of selected proposals after conducting feasibility and viability assessments. The move is expected to reduce innovation risks for startups while accelerating deployment of practical solutions.
Among the priority focus areas identified are AI-based systems for elephant intrusion detection on railway tracks, fire detection mechanisms in coaches, drone-based rail defect monitoring, and obstruction detection systems to improve train safety during foggy conditions.
The Rail Tech portal forms part of the Railways’ broader strategy to build a technology-driven and safety-centric transportation ecosystem while fostering collaboration with India’s startup community.
